One of our cars was broken into overnight, driver's window was broken and the GPS was stolen. There were other things in the car that were not touched.

Called the police. The officer came in about half hour, took the report. Told me that they have not had any other reports from our area yet. "Yet" was very fucking encouraging. Then called the insurance company. Apparently we have elected for some sort of glass coverage, which I did not even know about, and thus NYS waves deductible fees and it will cost us nothing to replace the glass. The insurance rep scheduled an appointment for the autoglass service to come to our house and replace the glass. No need to drive anywhere, thankfully. They should be here between noon and 5pm. I wonder if they will also clean up the broken glass off seats, inside the car, and on the street. Regardless, provided they do fix the glass later today, all will be good, short of stolen GPS, which we now have to replace (arrrghhh, $140).
The worst part, this is a very safe area, we've been here for 2,5 years and never even heard of anything like that before. What now? Taking everything out of cars daily. I routinely leave my purse, wallet, documents, clothes, etc, in car overnight, not to mention the GPS and two DVD players that are in my car (the car that was broken into is au pair's car). And even if GPS can theoretically be taken out of the car at the end of the day, it is not the case with DVD players. They are installed there semi-permanently.
I hate this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UPD: Ok, the car is fixed. A very nice cute guy came over and completely cleaned the car, vacuumed all the broken glass, and replaced the window. Life goes on. :)
